John 1:12 ""But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name."
Most people who read this verse miss what it really says. It does NOT say, “those who receive Him are children of God”. What it says is that, He gives us the RIGHT to BECOME children of God. The KJV says, He gives the “power” to become children of God. So once we receive Christ, it is only then that we are able to become God’s children. Christ has sent His Spirit within us—So we now have within us the power that can cause us to become the children of God. It should be one smooth continual acceptance where by we cry out Abba Abba... but many don’t fully understand all of what happened until later... and sadly some never do get it. How we live our life from that point shows the depth of knowledge we have of Christ and what we truly believed.
As John G. Lake once said, “The secret of Christianity is in being. It is in being a possessor of the nature of Christ. In other words, it is being: Christ in character, Christ in demonstration, Christ in agency of transmission.” When we “give” ourself to the Lord, we become Christ-like, a little-Christ, a Christian. We are not our own. What does it mean to believe in His name?
As Abraham walked with God (daily communicated with Him for guidance and wisdom), God revealed to Him different meanings of His name. Each name revealed who God is. So knowing Him as Yehovah-Rapha, the Lord that heals; that is who He is—you believe in His name and all that it means. We can only believe in a person in as much as we know them—God is who He is, we can not change Him. So we must also come to KNOW who God is, and accept all of Him. After all, that is what “eternal life” means according to Jesus, that we “know Him”. (John 17:3)
Father ,thank You for sending us the Holy Spirit by which we can become Your children. We know that we can not accomplish that on our own. Thank You for turning this fallen mess we got ourselves in, for your good pleasure, help me see the purpose You have for me. Amen
