"Beware least anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not
according to Christ."
Most Christians, and really, most people do not feel that they are being cheated on a daily bases. But this verse tells us that we are being cheated through
philosophy and empty deceit that comes from the basic principles of the world we live in. In other words, someone else is guiding us and influencing us in how to think. Most of us think that we can make our own decisions, choose our own
ways—that we don’t have to follow Christ and we don’t have to follow the devil either. How does the world say it? We can do it “my way”.
The truth, that most of us don’t realize, is we were never made to direct our own
paths. That has never been an option. (Jeremiah 10:23) We don’t even have that power within us to do so. I’m sure Eve thought she was doing it her way too. But our Creator has only put before us “two” choices, Life or Death—there
is no neutral ground—You are either for or against God. So what this verse is telling us is to be aware of this truth. If you are not doing according to Christ, you are doing according to the god of this world, which is Satan.
It also mentions ‘according to the tradition of men’, which is merely following what men teach whether in the religious circle or outside of it. According to I John 4:1 it is wise to test all the spirits whether they are of God or not. And bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ. II Corinthians 10:5
Father, May I always sense the discernment the Holy Spirit shows me over the things that I hear and study. Thank You for opening my eyes and ears to Your truths about the devil’s lies, about the worlds lies too, so I won’t fall prey to his ways.
Help me to be attentive to Your plan. Amen
